Up late due to a weather delay lasting almost two hours during their hard-fought win against the Australians, the Iroquois Nationals will prepare for their toughest test yet in the unbeaten Americans. Down 8-7 to the upstart Aussies late last night, the Iroquois tied it before the storm break and reopened play with four-straight goals to take control of the game. After allowing the next two goals, the Nationals buckled down and held on for the 12-10 win.

Iroquois Nationals Behind the Scenes: Part 3

The Iroquois Nationals were able to avoid two consecutive days of awful weather and emerge Sunday sitting at 2-0 leading up to an important game against Canada Sunday night.

With two games under their belts, the Iroquois appeared to be well on their way to competing for a medal. The team put on a wild display against Japan in a 24-9 win. During that game, I felt like I got what I was hoping for these past few years in looking forward to the Iroquois taking the field again and bringing together some of their very best players who’ve become elite college and pro players since the 2010 mishap.

I still haven’t had a chance to sit down with him and talk at length, but it certainly felt like a special opportunity to stand alongside Chief Oren Lyons during the Iroquois’ bushwhacking of Japan. Watching Warren Hill in the cage, I couldn’t help but wonder what type of impact the Six Nations product could have next year at Syracuse University. Knowing the answer, I asked Lyons who the last Native American goalie was to start at Syracuse.

Dickson’s Strike Lifts Canada Over Iroquois in Thriller

In a game for the ages, Curtis Dickson scored a game-winning goal with 19 seconds remaining on the clock, lifting Canada to a 9-8 win over the Iroquois Nationals in front of a capacity crowd on Sunday night in FIL World Championship group play.

The winner came off a feed from Jeremy Noble, who drew a double-team as the final minute of the game wound down that left Dickson alone right along the crease, where he was able to turn the corner and beat Iroquois goalkeeper Warren Hill.

Iroquois start strong at 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships

In his second game in less than 24 hours, 2014 NLL scoring champ and MVP finalist Cody Jamieson exploded for seven points in the Iroquois Nationals’ 24-9 victory over Japan this afternoon in Commerce City. Colo. “Jammer” is one of three Rochester Knighthawks on the Iroquois team who remained undefeated at the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championships.

“We’re 2-0 now and the team’s coming together great,”said Knighthawks forward Craig Point. “We just have to keep scoring and keep our young legs going hard.”

Iroquois Nationals compete as own nation at lacrosse worlds

The only indigenous team competing internationally as a sovereign nation is in Colorado for the World Lacrosse Championships.

However, it’s more than a game for the 27-man Iroquois Nationals.

“It’s our way of life. It’s deep in our culture. In our cradle board, we are given a wooden lacrosse stick. We grew up playing since we’ve been walking,” Jeremy Thompson, 27, told The Denver Post.

The Nationals will compete against the world’s top players from Australia, Canada, England, Japan and the U.S. in the top tier of the nine-day competition played every four years.

Thompsons Lead Iroquois Road Show Into Denver

The headline attractions are the Thompsons. Beville surmised it’s the lacrosse equivalent of traveling with the Beatles, and he’s not far off. Every time Lyle or his three brothers walk into the lobby of the world championship host hotel where they are staying, young lacrosse fans and their parents flock to them, asking for a picture before the team heads off to a practice. In the waning moments of games, kids begin to line up along the front of the bleachers to ensure a good spot for an autograph. It’s a sight to see.
