Fighting for more than a win: Iroquois lacrosse team back in championships
This Friday in Denver, the Iroquois men’s lacrosse team will play its opening game of the World Lacrosse Championships against England, which hosted the last edition of the quadrennial tournament.
And this time, all is relatively quiet — at least in the travel department — for the Native American team whose ancestors invented the game.
Four years ago, the Iroquois squad made international headlines en route to the world championships in Manchester when, at the last minute, the British government wouldn’t recognize the tribal passports they had been using for decades. Hillary Clinton, then secretary of state, stepped in to grant the team members one-time travel waivers. Oscar-winning director James Cameron donated $50,000 to defray costs while the team was stuck in New York City as bureaucrats dickered over documents.

On Monday, July 7, the Nationals held a meet and greet with members of the Denver area native community at Denver East High School.
World Lacrosse Championships Player Profile: Brett Bucktooth
The 6’1”, 205 lbs. attack man is a member of the Oneida Nation and was acquired by the Vancouver Stealth in 2012. In 2006, he was selected third overall in the NLL Entry Draft by the Buffalo Bandits. Bucktooth played for the Nationals in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championship games, helping the team earn silver medals in 2007 and 2011.

Watch the Iroquois Nationals Attack at World Lacrosse Championship
The 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championship will take place in Denver July 10–19, 2014. The Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team should have a chance at winning first place with the addition of the Thompson triple threat to the team. The two Thompson brothers, Lyle and Miles recently made history when they became the first Native Americans to win the Tewaarton Trophy.

DENVER – Lacrosse teams from 38 countries are converging on Colorado for the 2014 World Championships, which will be held at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City July 10 – 19.
One of the teams, the Iroquois Nationals, held a meet and greet Monday with members of the Denver area Native American community at Denver East High School.

Iroquois Nationals Receive Warm Welcome to the FIL Championships
DENVER – The Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team began arriving in the Mile High City on July 3 to get acclimated and prepare for the 2014 Federal of International Lacrosse World Championship scheduled from July 10 to July 19 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Opening ceremonies begin at 5 p.m.
As the oldest and fastest-growing sport in America, this year’s lacrosse world championship is expected to attract more than 100,000 fans to watch 38 nations compete in 142 games scheduled over 10 days in nine divisions.
The Iroquois Nationals are ranked in the top Blue Division with five other nations, and will compete against England, Canada, Australia, Japan and the United States. They are the only all-Native team sanctioned to compete at the international level and participated in five previous world men’s field lacrosse tournaments.
