Rochester Knighthawks Lacrosse Club Press Release (November 19, 2015)
(November 19, 2015)… The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that they have invited free agent Ty Thompson to the Training Camp. The forwards will join the Knighthawks on Saturday, Nov. 21st as they open camp at noon at Total Sports Experience in East Rochester.
“It’s an awesome feeling. I am just really excited for this opportunity,” said Thompson. “I grew up watching a lot of Rochester Knighthawks games. It feels pretty good to just have this chance to show my stuff.”
The 24-year-old Thompson will attend his second National Lacrosse League Training Camp after being selected 26th overall by the New England Black Wolves in the 2014 Entry Draft. Thompson, who hails from Akwesasne, had a stellar four-year collegiate career at the University at Albany, posting 154 goals, 41 assists and 195 points. He currently ranks fourth on the school’s all-time goal-scoring list. In his final two seasons with the Great Danes (2013-14), he received back-to-back Division I Honorable Mention All-American and Second Team All-America East honors.
After an outstanding junior season, he was drafted in the fourth round (28th overall) by the Rochester Rattlers in the Major League Lacrosse Draft. During the 2013 campaign, he achieved career highs in goals (54), assists (14) and points (68), as he finished third on the team in scoring behind his cousins, Lyle and Miles Thompson. In 2014, the trio led the Great Danes to their greatest season in school history.
“To be able to play with them was something special,” said Ty. “To become ranked and take Albany to the quarterfinals was an awesome experience. I had a great time.”
Ty spent this past summer playing for the Kahnawake Mohawks in the Quebec Senior “B” Lacrosse League. In five games, he registered nine goals and 13 assists. In 2014, he played with Knighthawks goalie Angus Goodleaf and was a member of the Quebec League championship team. That same year, Thompson was named to the Iroquois Nationals and won a bronze medal at the 2014 FIL World Lacrosse Championship.
This weekend, he will get to step onto another big stage as he competes for a spot on the Rochester Knighthawks’ roster.
“It’s going to be awesome,” said Thompson. “Craig Point was my idol growing up. So, it’s going to be pretty cool to be on the same floor as him on offense. Joe Resetarits – I
played with him in college. It’s just going to be fun. Playing with these good players is what makes you better. I am just really looking forward to it.”
